What is Microneedling?
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive treatment that uses fine needles to create micro-injuries in the skin. This process stimulates the body’s natural healing response, promoting collagen and elastin production, which leads to smoother, firmer skin. It’s commonly used to address various skin concerns, including fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, and overall skin texture.
Benefits of Microneedling
- Helps to smooth rough skin and minimize the appearance of scars.
- Stimulates collagen and elastin, promoting youthful skin.
- Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
- Helps to tighten enlarged pores.
- Allows for deeper penetration of serums and topical treatments.
- Offers results with little recovery time, making it suitable for various lifestyles.
Safety
Microneedling is minimally invasive, requiring little to no downtime. It’s considered safe for most people who are in overall good health. Avoid this procedure if using certain acne medications and have active acne or moderate to severe psoriasis or eczema.
Pre-Care for Microneedling
- Discuss your skin concerns and goals with your provider during the consultation.
- Refrain from blood-thinning medications or supplements for a week before treatment.
- Stop using retinoids and exfoliants a week prior to minimize sensitivity.
- Drink plenty of water to keep your skin well-hydrated.
- Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning for at least two weeks before your appointment.
Post-Care for Microneedling
- Use only gentle cleansers and moisturizers, along with hydrating or healing serums containing hyaluronic acid.
- Do not use scrubs or rub vigorously. Avoid any chemical or laser treatments following microneedling. Additionally, microdermabrasion, waxing, and depilatories are not recommended for at least 3-4 weeks.
- Avoid any heat or sweat-inducing activities, including vigorous exercise, saunas, and steam rooms for 24 hours.
- Apply SPF 30+ daily and avoid direct sun exposure for two weeks to protect your skin.
- Avoid touching or picking the treated area to ensure proper healing.
- Attend any follow-up appointments and discuss concerns with your provider.
- Contact your skincare professional if you notice persistent redness or irritation.
For optimal results, a series of treatments may be recommended, often spaced 4-6 weeks apart.
