What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive treatment that gently exfoliates the skin, removing a thin layer of dead skin. Complexion can appear smoother, brighter, and more even in color, minimizing the appearance of wrinkles and scars. Just one microdermabrasion treatment leaves the skin feeling soft, smooth, and radiant. A series of treatments can improve skin texture and tone while reducing fine wrinkles, sun damage, acne scars, enlarged pores, and even stretch marks.

Uses and Benefits

The goal of microdermabrasion is to make a person’s complexion smoother, brighter, and more even in color.

What does it help improve?

  • Dullness in the complexion
  • Uneven skin tone and texture
  • Age spots
  • Dark spots that can form after acne clears up
  • Melasma, a common issue that forms dark spots or patches on the skin
  • Scars

Microdermabrasion is great for enhancing the results of anti-aging or skin-bleaching products. The procedure can help these products penetrate the skin.

Who should avoid microdermabrasion?

  • Individuals with an active cold sore outbreak
  • Moderate to severe acne
  • Open wounds or skin irritation
  • A rash
  • Rosacea
  • A suspicious mole
  • Sunburn

If you have taken the acne medication isotretinoin in the past six months, you should wait to have a microdermabrasion treatment.

Pre-treatment precautions

  • Avoid aspirin and aspirin-based medicine
  • Do not wax the treatment area
  • Stay out of the sun to avoid a sunburn
  • Stop using exfoliating products, Retin-A, and glycolic acid

Unless otherwise instructed, avoid using topical treatments on the morning of the appointment.

What Can I Expect After Treatment?

Because microdermabrasion works on the very surface of the skin, there are few issues in terms of side effects. However, tenderness, swelling, or minor bruising can occur. Typically after treatment, your skin will be a bit pink, which usually fades within a few hours.

For a day or so afterward, it might feel like you have a minor sunburn. Otherwise, you’ll be able to go about your day right after your treatment.

Post-treatment care:

  • Avoid applying acne treatments, toner, or medicated cleansers immediately after treatment, as they may cause stinging or burning.
  • Makeup, moisturizers, and non-medicated cleansers can usually be used right after treatment.
  • Use sunscreen as your skin will be more susceptible to sun damage.
